Eating Out
From Iceland FAQ
Such is its popularity that it’s been said that pizza is the national dish of Iceland. Devitos makes good pizzas at a good price. You can check out the menu here: Devitos. They do pizzas up to 18”! If we split an 18” margarita between us (equal to us each getting a 9” pizza) then it’d only be about £4.50 each. Or to split two 16” pizzas between us would be about £8 each.
Another contender for national dish is hot dogs. Icelandic hot dogs are usually made with lamb in them and claim to be the best in the world. They're cheap by Icelandic standard at about £4 but they don't tend to be that big so you might want 2.
What about a McDonalds? Well you're 7 years too late. They pulled out of Iceland in 2009 because of the cost of importing food. The BBC reported the franchisee as stating: "It just makes no sense. For a kilo of onion, imported from Germany, I'm paying the equivalent of a bottle of good whisky,". Even local fast food joint is not cheap at about £10 for a burger and fries.
There are 8 KFC restaurants in Iceland. A snackbox that costs £2 here is about £4.25 there. A chicken burger meal is about £10.
If the cost of food wasn't enough reason to bring our own then there's the fact you can travel 100 miles without passing a single place to eat. Most gas stations double up as restaurants and will sell burgers, hot dogs, ice cream etc.
Ah, yes ice cream! You might not expect it but ice cream is very popular in Iceland so if you want a 99 dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts then you'll probably be able to get one every time we fill up with fuel.
Here's one bit of good news, free refills are common in Iceland. Paying £3.20 for a coffee doesn't sound so bad when you have several cups. The same goes for soft drinks at fast food places.
