The downside of hostels is that they really need to be booked well in advance. This means we have to make a plan and stick to it.

In our last trip we explored the west of Iceland. This time we could explore the north and east. In September, the mountain roads will be open. Instead of driving around the ring road, we can cut through the interior on the F35 Kjolur route. We then work our way clockwise around Iceland.

2017 cost was £760 for flights, baggage and car hire. If we're not camping then can use 2 bags instead of 3. We can also get a smaller car which saves a lot. THE PLAN!

New Plan! The east is a beast so west is best. The madness plan is too intense and the weather forecast has changed. It's still forecast rain Sunday and Monday for the South coast so plan is the go north and west then come back down to South coast.

Estimate 1100 miles covered, 21 hours driving, 20 hours looking at stuff.

OLD PLAN

Check the [http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/areas/ current weather forecasts] and you'll see the following:
*SUNDAY - Sun in west and north. Cloud in south and east
*MONDAY - Sun in west, north and east. Rain (heavy around iceberg lagoon) in south.
*TUESDAY - Sun and showers of rain in west, north and east. Rain in south.
*WEDNESDAY - Mix of sun and cloud across Iceland
This is as of Thursday evening. The forecast has improved a lot over the last 48 hours. Let's hope it keeps improving.

Now, the initial idea was just to explore the south coast but we're going to have rubbish weather if we do that now so I suggest we follow the weather and go around Iceland in a clockwise direction. Here is for and against:

I think it's do-able. We'll have to miss out large chunks like the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Westjords and probably Lake Myvatn. You could spend 2 days in each of these locations easily. However, we're never going to be able to see everything anyway (at least not in this system!) so we just have to accept that.

I've worked out an itinerary for the first 2 days. The goal is to camp at a free campsite at Detifoss on Monday evening. That would put us ahead for the next 2 days. We would have covered 630 miles by then. I've allowed 16 hours driving time for that due to the gravel roads. We'd also spend over 8 hours out the car looking at stuff. This allows a bare minimum time for sleeping, eating, etc!

Another option is to spend longer at the sights that day and then just drive through the night? That's what I did the last time I was in Iceland. I drove from Jokulsarlon to Reykjavik in one go at night. We can decide what we'll do sometime when we're in Iceland.

GUESSTIMATION: 4 hours and 165 miles driving to Jokulsarlon. 3.5 hours looking at stuff plus time at icebergs.

Now, the initial idea was just to explore the south coast but we're going to have rubbish weather if we do that now so I suggest we follow the weather and go around Iceland in a clockwise direction. Here is for and against:

*It's a lot, lot more driving which means a lot, lot less time looking at stuff, eating, sleeping, etc.
*As our schedule tightens, we lose a lot of flexibility. This limits our options for camping locations especially.

I think it's do-able. We'll have to miss out large chunks like the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Westjords and probably Lake Myvatn. You could spend 2 days in each of these locations easily. However, we're never going to be able to see everything anyway (at least not in this system!) so we just have to accept that.

I've worked out an itinerary for the first 2 days. The goal is to camp at a free campsite at Detifoss on Monday evening. That would put us ahead for the next 2 days. We would have covered 630 miles by then. I've allowed 16 hours driving time for that due to the gravel roads. We'd also spend over 8 hours out the car looking at stuff. This allows a bare minimum time for sleeping, eating, etc!

We will cover 300 miles so will leave the Golden Circle attractions to Wednesday. However, it will still be a long day. I reckon we might not get to the campsite until 10pm.

The goal is a campsite at Blonduos which have emailed me back to confirm they're open and they're prices are 750ISK (less than £6) per person. Happy with that?

I'm going to mail them back just to check the guy didn't mean to type 1750 instead!
